What Is a Custom Pattern?
A custom pattern is a bespoke Damascus design created to mirror your vision.
Each design we create is one-of-a-kind. You own the trademark. You own the rights. It is, quite literally, your pattern.
We combine your creative direction with our deep heritage, advanced technology, and more than 30 years of pattern-steel expertise. Working collaboratively, we craft a pattern that feels unmistakably yours—from the smallest detail to the final reveal. This process is available from our team in both DS93X and DS95X.
In 2024, Benchmade released two versions of their 99T Necron Bali-song featuring the first-ever customer-designed pattern—showcasing the power of this process.
Introducing the Sample Process
To ensure alignment from the very beginning, we walk through a structured sample process. This includes brainstorming guidance, imagery exploration, and pattern trials that help translate abstract ideas into tangible design directions.
Our sample client is an accessories designer looking to introduce stainless steel elements into their work—specifically cuffs and bracelets. Their creative style is:
- Traditional yet modern
- Organic, soft, and feminine
- Smooth, symmetrical, and calm
These guiding characteristics help us tailor the design exploration.
How the Process Works
1. Internal Brainstorming
Your team gathers ideas, images, reference styles, and inspiration that reflect your brand and project mood.
To help clients articulate their aesthetic, we recommend selecting from paired opposite adjectives (we can supply a list).

2. Sample Sets
We design three distinct pairs of pattern concepts based on your input – the pairs are matched between the top and bottom image, and represent a direction we can move towards.
These pattern sets have been inspired by our sample customer.
3. Selection
You choose the pair that resonates most with your vision. This becomes the foundation for further refinement.
Chosen Set & Next Steps
From there, we expand into iterations, adjusting shape, rhythm, balance, and intensity until the final pattern emerges.
4. Renderings
We create visual renderings that show how your selected patterns will appear.
Rendered previews offer a realistic look at how the pattern will appear on finished products—helping you make confident decisions.
5. Custom Pattern Design
Once approved, our designers finalize a bespoke pattern that integrates your inspiration with our craftsmanship.
6. Production & Delivery
Our team will update you throughout the tooling and material-creation stages. Your pattern can be delivered in a wide range of dimensions—just ask us what’s possible.
